About Adam Hay-Nicholls

Adam Hay-Nicholls spent four years with Formula One's daily paddock magazine, The Red Bulletin, where he was senior writer and interviewed everyone from mechanics and truckies to world champion drivers and Oscar-winning celebrities. As a result, Adam knows everyone in F1 and has all the juicy gossip... What is printable is published in Metro. He started his writing career with car culture magazine Intersection, and contributes to a number of magazines and newspapers about F1. His first ever job, though, was selling sports cars. And his first appearance in a national newspaper was in The People and the News Of The World in 1981, aged just six weeks, when he was held by Princess Diana. The press made a big deal about his middle name being Charles.
Background: British, born in Winchester.
Current hometown: Paris.
Most memorable moment in F1: The death of Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994, and the 2005 US Grand Prix, when only six cars raced.
Favourite ever F1 driver: At the time, Damon Hill. On reflection, Ayrton Senna.
Favourite F1 interviewee: Either Sebastian Vettel or Johnny Herbert (both hilarious), Jacques Villeneuve (totally candid) or Mario Andretti (engaging, friendly, and the granddad you wish you'd had).
Favourite track: Monaco.
Grand prix of choice: Singapore - it's like Monaco, but you don't have to get up and go to the track till 3pm. Party till the sun comes up!
Best overtaking move ever: Mika Hakkinen taking Michael Schumacher at Spa, in 2000, with backmarker Ricardo Zonta in the middle.
Best race ever: Rene Arnoux versus Gilles Villeneuve at the 1979 French Grand Prix.
Favourite racing car ever: Brabham BT49 or Ferrari 312 T2.
Best F1 party ever: Red Bull end-of-season party at Morumbi Stadium, Sao Paulo, in 2006.
Current car: None - planes, trains and rental 1-Series.
First car: Peugeot 205.
Dream car: Mercedes-Benz 280SL mk1 or Aston Martin Vantage.
Top speed: 320kph in a Ferrari 599 GTB.
Points on licence: Zero. Narrowly avoided a large fine from a cop in Houston, who looked at my licence and said "I know all you Europeans are speed demons, but if you wouldn't mind keeping it under 90mph in the state of Texas I'd really appreciate it."

Unlike most women, I generally don't like to shop. Going to the mall is something I do once or twice a year and only if necessary. Thankfully, with online shopping, I can shop from the comfort of my home.
